American Spaces

CAR

IMG_1703.JPG
CAR is a movement installation for three audience members at a time, that takes place in and around a moving vehicle. Using the landscape of car culture (parking lots, garages, gas stations, streets and drive-thrus) audience members move and are moved through a series of movement and video installations that inhabit the at once private and public space that is a car. CAR investigates the body of performer/driver, the body of witness/passenger, and the body of the car itself. CAR explores how we communicate when we are in-cased in a small piece of metal that can speed, stop, lock us in, blow us up, or crash at any moment.

CAR

Kate and her dancers are currently rehearsing CAR, a new movement installation created in collaboration with video artist Ricardo Rivera, composer Joshua Kerr Cicetti, and dramaturge Sebastienne Mundhiem. The second work in a trilogy of performance installations called “American Spaces,” Car will take place inside a moving vehicle. It will be performed for three audience members at a time, who sit in the backseat. They will be driven through the landscape of car culture (in parking lots, garages, and drive-thrus), witnessing and participating in movement events and interactive video installations. Car will unravel the secrets and history held in cars, using a seemingly ordinary space to create extraordinary movement events. Car will investigate the body of the performer/driver, the body of the spectator/passenger, and the body of the car itself.

The research and development of Car is made possible with support from the Map Fund, a program of Creative Capital supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, and Dance Advance, a program of the Pew Charitable Trusts administered by the University of the Arts, Susan Hess Choreographers Project, The Independence Foundation, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Whole Foods Market, Philly Car Share and The Philadelphia Live Arts Festival.

American Spaces

AMERICAN SPACES is a trilogy of dances that take place in everyday spaces. Throughout the rooms of a house. In the backseat of a car. In the aisles of a department store. Created in collaboration with video artist Ricardo Rivera and composer Joshua Kerr Cicetti, the performances integrate video and sound installations and choreography into the architecture
of each locale. The audience is brought on intimate, human-scale journeys from place to place. With “American Spaces” we want to unravel the secrets and history held in the places we spend our day-to-day. We aim to investigate the witness-spectator relationship, relocating audiences to a house, a car, and a store.
